This week, I headed back up Big Black Mountain in San Diego. I’ve stayed here a couple of times before, and it’s always an amazing treat. I absolutely love the spot, and I’m spending a couple of weeks up here this time. Between the adventure of a drive getting up and the amazing sunsets, the only bad so far has been getting stuck from the rain that came through–even that was kind of fun, in its own right.
Big Black Mountain is located in the Palomar District of Cleveland National Forest. There’s a few spots to boondock on, including all the way up on the summit block. The first night up, I only went about halfway up, selecting a clearing that I have used before. Since then, however, I made my way up to the summit area, where I’ve been staying.
The cell service isn’t as good up on the summit, but the views are astounding. The rain left everything foggy, and me uncomfortable to go back down, so I’ve been stuck up here the last few days now. With the sun shining, the ground is getting a bit more dry and solid, though, and the solar panels are working again.
Perhaps the best part of this summit block is that there are pine trees for me to hang my hammock on nicely! I had to sleep in the car during the rain, but with clear skies ahead, I get plenty of hammock sleeping coming my way!
